Old wood out, white vinyl in: a San Bernardino backyard reset

A long white vinyl privacy run stepped cleanly down a sloped yard — replacing a failing wood fence with a system that never needs paint and shrugs off Inland Empire summers.

The project

The old wood fence at this San Bernardino home had done its time — you can still see the gray boards stacked on the ground in the photos. In its place we ran a long line of 6 ft white vinyl privacy fencing: tongue-and-groove panels with no gaps, steel-reinforced posts set in fresh concrete footings, wrapped around the rear corner of the lot.

The grade is the detail that separates a clean install from a sloppy one. This yard falls steadily along the back line, so the panels are stepped — each section dead level, each post plumb, the top line descending in even increments instead of sagging with the dirt. Solid privacy panels can't tilt to follow a slope the way open pickets can, and stepping is how the fence ends up looking engineered rather than improvised.

Why vinyl wins in the Inland Empire

San Bernardino summers are the hardest test a fence faces in Southern California: months of 100°F sun, dry soil that shifts, and sprinklers hitting the fence line every night. Wood responds by warping, splitting, and graying; vinyl responds by needing a rinse. Quality virgin vinyl with UV inhibitors won't yellow or go brittle, there's nothing for termites to eat, and the white stays white without a paint crew every few years. Over a decade, the math isn't close.

Vinyl privacy fencing typically runs about $30–$60 per linear foot installed, including tear-out of the old fence on most jobs. Ballpark yours with the online estimate and confirm with a free on-site measurement.

Project FAQ

Is vinyl a good replacement for an old wood fence?

For most Inland Empire backyards, yes. The wood fence vinyl replaces has usually spent 15-20 years warping, graying, and feeding termites. Vinyl never needs paint or stain, doesn’t rot or attract termites, and washes clean with a hose. On this San Bernardino project we tore out the failing wood line and set a new white vinyl privacy fence on steel-reinforced posts in fresh concrete footings.

How is a fence installed on a slope?

Two ways: racking (the panels tilt to follow the grade) or stepping (each panel stays level and the fence steps down in increments). Solid vinyl privacy panels don’t rack well, so on sloped ground like this San Bernardino yard we step the panels — each section level, each post plumb — which gives a clean, intentional stair-step top line and keeps every panel fully supported.

Does white vinyl fence yellow or crack in Inland Empire heat?

Quality virgin vinyl with UV inhibitors (titanium dioxide) is made for exactly this climate — it resists yellowing, chalking, and brittleness through San Bernardino’s 100-degree summers. Cheap recycled-blend vinyl is where the horror stories come from. We install quality vinyl systems with steel-reinforced posts, backed by our 1-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer’s material warranty.

How much does a vinyl privacy fence cost?

Vinyl privacy fencing typically runs about $30 to $60 per linear foot installed, depending on height, slope work, and tear-out of the old fence. That’s more than wood up front but less over time — no painting, staining, or board replacement. We give a firm written quote after a free on-site measurement.
